A set of four separate two panel screens beautifully painted, depicting horses of various colors and tethered by ropes in their illustrious stables. In ancient Japan horses have been given special honor, as they were believed to represent the divine. Admired for their power, grace and beauty the horse remains a strong symbol of Japan’s cultural history. Mineral pigments and gold leaf on mulberry paper with black lacquer trim. Elaborate bronze with inlaid gold hardware. Each two panel screen measures: 65.5"h. x 49"w. x .75"d. All four screens together measure: 65.5"h. x 196"w. x .75"d.
