Pair of Japanese Two Panel Screens: Sumi-e Snow Scene / Mountain Landscape

The left screen titled Sumi-e Snow Scene has a poem on the upper left side that reads: Stormy valleys in high mountains with more snow to come. The right screen titled Mountain Landscape has a poem on the upper right side that reads: Sounds of cicadas, in mountain valleys and the aroma of pine needles. Both drawn in ink on mulberry paper with silk brocade border and black lacquer trim. Signature and seal read: Sagawa Kakoku. Original storage box. Measurements listed are for each individual screen. Notes about the artist: Sagawa Kakoku (1867-1946) born in Yonesaki village in 1867 (Keio 3). He studied under Matsudaira Sekkô a former Mito clan member. He later became a student of Nozawa Hakka of Tatsunokuchi. In 1904 he moved to Tokyo and studied under Komuro Suiun with whom he also had contact with Araki Jippo. He was selected for the first time for the 2nd Imperial Art Exhibition in 1920, and his selected work was made an Imperial Household Agency article. He continued to exhibit his works at the Imperial Exhibition and the Ibaraki Prefectural Art Exhibition.
