Dating to circa 1880, this Japanese two-panel screen presents an idealized mountain landscape inspired by the classical Chinese painting tradition, a style long embraced by Japanese artists for its emphasis on poetry, scholarship, and contemplation. Executed in ink on gold silk with restrained use of mineral pigments, the composition unfolds through layered mountains, winding paths, rustic dwellings, and distant figures, inviting the viewer into a serene and imagined landscape.
