Japanese Two Panel Screen: Pine in Snow
This elegant two-panel screen depicts a snow-laden pine tree set against a luminous gold-leaf ground, a subject long associated with endurance, longevity, and seasonal renewal in Japanese painting. The pine’s twisting trunk and layered branches are rendered with controlled brushwork and subtle mineral pigments, while softly gathered snow accentuates the sculptural quality of the form. The asymmetrical composition, framed by areas of open gold ground, reflects the Kano School’s enduring mastery of balance, negative space, and decorative refinement. Executed in mineral pigments on gold leaf, the screen is finished with a silk brocade border and lacquered wood trim. Dating to the mid-19th century, this work exemplifies the late Edo-period (1603-1868) Kano tradition, in which established pictorial modes were carefully preserved and refined for elite architectural interiors.
