Japanese Two Panel Screen: Misty Morning Landscape on Gold

Soft bands of mist drift across a luminous gold ground in this serene landscape from the Taisho period (1912–1926). Delicate mineral pigments create subtle transitions of color, while sparse details of low grasses and distant reeds anchor the composition without disturbing its remarkable sense of openness. The restrained palette and expansive negative space evoke the quiet stillness of daybreak, demonstrating the refined simplicity that characterizes many early twentieth-century Japanese screens. Anonymous artist, mounted with lacquer wood trim.
