Japanese Two Panel Screen: Gourds on Bamboo Arbor

In Japan, gardeners train their gourds and squashes up an arbor to create a perfect gourd shape. Gourds were used for containers and the more perfect the shape the more desirable the container. Mid Edo period, mid 18th century Rimpa school painting with gold leaf gourds and mineral pigments on oxidized silver leaf ground. Interesting mottled effect on the silver leafground. Has a silk brocade border.
