Japanese Six-Panel Screen: Seaside Shrine

This elegant six-panel screen depicts a tranquil coastal landscape centered on a shrine complex that strongly resembles Itsukushima Shrine, one of Japan's most celebrated sacred sites. Attributed to the Tosa School and dating to circa 1800, the composition combines sweeping expanses of water with wooded islands, boats, and finely rendered architecture. Executed in mineral pigments on gold leaf, the luminous surface enhances the atmospheric quality of the scene while reflecting the Tosa School's refined decorative style and narrative approach to painting. The screen is finished with a silk brocade border and black lacquer trim, exemplifying the elegance of late Edo period craftsmanship.
