Japanese Six Panel Screen: Vermillion Trade Ship
A vermilion trade ship, with a combination of bamboo and fabric sails. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Japanese ships were sailed by experienced European sailors from Japan to the Indonesian archipelago where they would trade for vermilion. Mineral pigments on gold leaf. Signature and seal read: Tosa Mitsusada (1736-1806). Calligraphy above the signature reads: this painting was copied from a painting by Hishiiki Moronobu, who died in 1694.
