Japanese Six Panel Screen: Portuguese Gentlemen on a Japanese Ship (Nanban screen)
Featuring a vermilion trade ship, with a combination of bamboo and fabric sails. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Japanese ships were sailed by experienced European sailors from Japan to the Indonesian archipelago where they would trade for vermilion. Mineral pigments on gold leaf. Signature and seal read: Tosa Mitsusada.
