Japanese Six Panel Screen: Peonies
A magnificent six-panel screen of the Edo period (1603-1868) richly decorated with a dense, sprawling bank of peonies (botan), the "King of Flowers." The motif is executed in the highly decorative style of the Kano School. Vibrant white, blush pink, and crimson pigments set against deep green foliage. The upper register is completely enveloped by an atmospheric field of shimmering gold flakes, a classic device that unifies the composition and provides an opulent backdrop. Pigments and gold flakes on mulberry paper. Silk brocade border with black lacquer trim
