Japanese Six Panel Screen: Horses on the Plain with Grasses by Tosa Mitsuoki

Signed and documented by Mitsuoki Tosa, 1617-1691. Priest name: Josho. Son and pupil of Tosa Mitsunori. Became a priest and took the name of Josho and in 1654 attained position of Edotoro azukari (chief artist) and then Hogen on 1685. With Mitsunaga and Mitsunobu were known as the Sampitsu (Three Brushes) of the Tosa School. Also known as specialist in kachoga painted with great elegance with soft, cool colors and purity of line. (Attribution in a letter dated 1952 by Ichimatsu Tanaka, Director of National Research Institute, Tokyo). Ex Collection of Baron Sumitomo, who commissioned a set of four (it is believed). Mineral pigments on gold leaf.
