Japanese Bronze Sculpture of Daruma
A beautifully executed bronze sculpture of standing Daruma with wonderful patina. In Sanskrit, Bodhidharma (known as Daruma in Japan) was a sage who lived in the fifth or sixth century AD. He is commonly considered the founder of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Zen is the term used in Japan, but Daruma’s philosophy arrived first in China, where it gained popularity as Chan Buddhism. Centuries later, it develop in Japan as Zen.
