Edo Period (1603 - 1868) kogo (incense container) in black lacquer covered with heart sutra (lesson or scripture) text in gold and silver. Raised calligraphic symbol for the heart in Sanskrit. Nashiji ground inside and pewter rim. The heart sutra is the most popular sutra in East Asian Buddhism.
