Antique Japanese Kanban (Shop Sign)
Edo period (early 19th century) Japanese kanban, or shop sign. Beautiful and stylized calligraphy carefully carved on a wooden sign articulating details in the brushstrokes. Calligraphy reads: urushi. This sign was made for a store that sells lacquer.
