19th Century Lacquer Incense Container (Kogo)
Fukidome-nuri ground with praying mantis lightly incised on lid. Signed; Kyusai for the incised technique; Rijo for the fukidome-nuri ground. Interior is black lacquer. The cover of the storage box says; Hachi (bee) Masahiro saku (made) with kakihan. A Small bee (hachi) hovers above a praying mantis (kamakiri) that is incised onto the top, whilst on the side of the container an ant makes its escape. The praying mantis is emblematic of courage.
