Japanese Two Panel Screen: Crossing the Bridge at Sano From The Tales of Ise
The Tales of Ise, or the Ise Monogatari, were a set of Heian age (794 - 1185) poems that were put together in a loose narative about a fictional man (thought to be the handsome aristocrat and poet, Ariwara no Narihira). This scene is based on a poem where the protagonist is approaching a bridge to cross with his two attendants in the snow. This painting was executed in the style of Tawaraya Sotatsu of the Rimpa school, as stated on calligraphy on the reverse. Seal is the Rimpa style but very difficult to read. Best guess is: Ogata Kenzan. Mineral pigments and gold leaf on mulberry paper with silk brocade border.
