Japanese Six Panel Screen: Sudare Flowing in a Summer Breeze

This exceptional six-panel screen depicts a garden animated by gently swaying sudare (curtains) suspended among flowering cherry, peonies, azalea, and young bamboo, accompanied by garden stone sculpture. This composition evokes the fleeting beauty of the season. Executed in mineral pigments and gold on mulberry paper, this screen has remarkable attention to detail. From the delicate silk tassels and brocade patterns of the curtains, to the finely rendered birds nesting within the scene. This masterful 17th to 18th century work achieves a rare balance of strength and grace, exemplifying the refinement of Japanese screen painting of the Edo period (1603–1868). Attributed to Unkoku Totatsu, adopted son of Totetsu. Signature reads Unkoku Totatsu Hitsu.
