Japanese Six Panel Screen: Scenes In and Around Kyoto (Rakuchu Rakugai-zu)

The left two panels is the intersection of the Tokaido (an important and historical road that connects Kyoto with Tokyo) at Sanjo (Sanjo translates to "Third Street" and is the main street of Kyoto filled with shops and restaurants). The right four panels of the screen depict the Gion district during the Gion Matsuri Festival during the month of July. This is one of the most famous festivals in Japan and has a parade that takes place at the Yasaka Shrine, which is shown in the middle of the screen. Mineral pigments on mulberry paper with gold leaf.
