Japanese Two Panel Screen: Battle Scene From Heike Wars

Tosa School painting depicting General Yoshitsune leading troops down Hiyodorigoe cliff to flank the Heike army.  To test the grade of the mountain, Yoshitsune asked a local hunter if he ever saw deer on the slope.  When the hunter replied yes, Yoshitsune decided that wherever deer could climb, his horsemen could ride.  As they descended, it is said the cliff was so steep, the stirrups of the men above clanked against the helmets of the men below.

Excellent detail,  mineral pigments on gold leaf with gold dust.
