Signed and sealed 北遥 Hokuyo.  Born in Kyoto, Toda Hokuyo graduated from the Kyoto City Public Craft School in 1922 and from its painting department in 1925. Before graduating, he began exhibiting with the Kokuga Sosaku Kyokai Ten (the Association for the Creation of National Painting Exhibition), showing a work titled Dahlia in 1924. Following graduation, he joined the Seikosha art group led by Nishiyama Suisho. Then in 1926, he was accepted into the government-sponsored Teiten exhibition for the first time. He continued to show at this venue another seven times, followed by the 1936 Bunten Kansaten, four of the Shin-Bunten, and after the Pacific War at the Nitten eight times. After his teacher Suisho died in 1958, Hokuyo joined the Tokyü-sha art association directed by the painter Domoto Insho. He died in Miyagi Prefecture in 1987.
